Medina County Rail Safety Task Force

The Medina County Rail Safety Task Force was formed in 2002 to promote railroad safety and awareness in Medina County.

There are a total of 108 rail crossings in the county as well as many private crossings. Upon the committee creation they reviewed each and every crossing with the intent to find those most dangerous crossings and seek out the funding necessary to make those crossings safe. This committee was created with assistance from the "The Angels on Track Foundation" - This non-profit, public-assistance organization is dedicated to improving safety at railroad crossings in general, but in Ohio in particular. The foundation was formed in 1997 and provides reimbursement grants to counties in Ohio, for railroad-crossing safety improvements, with emphasis on the installation of automated gates. 2003 - We are happy to report that the Rail Safety Task Force submitted applications to Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) to have lights and gates put up at Branch Road.in York Township, Garman Road in Westfield Township and Beach Road in Sharon Township. These projects have been approved by the PUCO. The PUCO contributes a certain percentage, with the rail company contributing a percentage and the Angels on Track Foundation contributing also leaving some remaining funds for the county to find.  It has been a learning experience for the members to work through this grant process but well worth it to have safe rail crossings for the citizens of Medina County!

2004 - This is the second year for this committee and we are as active as ever. Many of the crossings around the county have had brush removal done which has helped with the sight distance issues some crossings have. The committee has learned a lot about the grant process and also learning where we can get funding for the crossings that need attention. The three crossings for 2004 are Kennard Road and Ryan Road, Carlton near Palker and the Wolff Road and Columbia crossing.
