Serving the People and Making a Difference

All communities regardless of location are vulnerable to a variety of hazards. Emergency Management provides a structure for anticipating and dealing with emergency incidents.  Emergency Management system involves participants from all governmental levels and from the private sector. Activities are geared according to phases before, during, and after emergency events.

The effectiveness of Emergency Management rests on a network of relationships among their partners in the system.

The 5 phases of Emergency Management are:

 Mitigation

Preparedness

Response

Recover

and Homeland Security

We serve Medina County in all 5 phases

The Medina County Emergency Management Agency was established in 1990.  Prior to 1990 you may have known us as "Civil Defense".

Established under Chapter 5502 of the Ohio Revised Code, the Emergency Management Agency is the point of coordination in Medina County for response and recovery to disasters.

The primary focus of our agency when not in a response or recovery mode is to ensure that Medina County, and the more than 153,000 citizens residing in it, are prepared to respond and react to an emergency or disaster and to lead mitigation efforts against the potential of future disasters.

We are constantly updating and improving our  Emergency Operations Plan or (EOP). We work closely with the State of Ohio in reviewing and making changes to our "All Hazards and Mitigation Plan".

The EOP has been adopted by all 27 jurisdictions within Medina County as well as our Medina County Commissioners. This plan will allow Medina County, and the cities, villages and townships to apply for "Mitigation Funding" for special projects should a Presidential Declared Disaster occur. This funding is a percentage of the total declared disaster dollars and aids in the prevention of future losses.

We also manage the State Homeland Security Grants that have been active since the events of 9/11.

These grants have purchased much needed equipment items for our first responders so they can be better prepared for and to assist in the fight against terrorism, not only in Medina County, but our neighboring counties as well.
